Wiltshire Mind is a local Mental Health Charity based in Melksham, working to improve the lives of those with mental health issues.
The Charity provides help and support to anyone facing mental health problems.
At the Annual Town Council Meeting on Monday 15th May, Councillor Mrs Adrienne Westbrook was elected as Town Mayor for Melksham for the ensuing year.
At the same meeting Councillor Jon Hubbard was elected as Deputy Town Mayor.
The Town Council has adpted the anti-bullying charter set out by the Wiltshire Assembly of Youth.
Julia Cramp, the Associate Director for Commissioning, Performance and School Effectiveness wrote: In November 2016, the Wiltshire Assembly of Youth (WAY), an elected group voicing young people’s concerns, launched an anti-bullying charter setting out a vision to tackle bullying across the county; WAY is concerned about the impact that bullying has upon emotional wellbeing and mental health.
The Commonwealth Flag was flown above the Town Hall on Commonwealth Day.
Children from The Manor and River Mead Schools joined in with the "Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth" celebrations.
The Civic Awards for 2016 were presented at the Civic Awards Ceremony at Melksham Assembly Hall on Friday 10th March.
Julie Cannings received the award for her regular volunteer work tidying up the town.
Purple4Polio is in evidence at Melksham! The Purple4Polio initiative is an exciting partnership between Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland and the Royal Horticultural Society to showcase the purple crocus as a symbol of Rotary’s worldwide campaign to eradicate polio, with its colour representing the purple dye used to mark the finger of a child who has been immunized.
With the success of the campaign, the amount of polio-endemic countries has dropped from 125 to just three, with over 2.
Wiltshire Council has recently completed a Community Governance Review process which seeks to identify and address situations where, over time, communities may expand as new houses are built across the established boundaries resulting in people being in different parishes from their neighbours.
As a result of this process some 4,000 properties in Wiltshire will be encompassed within a different parish boundary with effect from April 2017.
At a meeting of Melksham Town Council held on 16th January 2017 Councillors unanimously agreed to set the local precept (the proportion of Council Tax payable to the Town Council) at a figure of £600,115.
This means that the precept of a Band D property will be £115.
Wiltshire Council will be redeveloping Melksham Market Place from January 30th 2017.
There are some exciting plans to enhance the entire area, as well as provide an access road to the new Health and Wellbeing Centre to be built on the Melksham House site.
Melksham Town Council reaffirmed its commitment to the future of the Town’s Assembly Hall at an extraordinary meeting of the council held on 9th January 2016, where it described the Assembly Hall as a valued community asset and resource located at the heart of the community it serves.
The Council recognised that it plays a key role as part of the social and recreational fabric of the town by promoting and hosting an eclectic mix of events and activities.
